Cyber Learning Program -- Registration Deadline Extended for Secondary

Dear BASD Parents/Guardians of Students in Grades 7-12

In an attempt to offer additional courses for secondary students (grades 7-12) who are enrolled in our Online/Cyber School Model or our Hybrid School Model through the district’s Cyber Learning Program, we will be adding live streaming for some courses that are not being offered  asynchronously through Edgenuity or Google Classroom.

As a result of this update, we are extending the enrollment deadline to Friday, August 21. We will then temporarily pause our Cyber Learning Program enrollment for secondary students (grades 7-12) from August 22-September 11. The enrollment registration date for elementary (grades K-6) is still today (Wednesday, August 19).

To participate in a course via live streaming, the student and parent are committing to the student being present online at the time the course is offered.

We intend to start live streaming with only a few courses to ensure our internet bandwidth and infrastructure can successfully support this approach. We feel confident that it will support the additional courses we plan to offer at this time. Once we have successfully implemented live streaming for the courses that are now listed in BASD’s Cyber Learning Program course offerings, we will consider adding additional courses.

Students will receive specific instructions and guidelines for the live streaming.  All live streaming will be done using district issued chromebooks. Under no circumstances are students permitted to record lessons. Technology will be a very helpful tool, but we must ensure we are not compromising anyone's privacy.

Please note when we attempt live streaming at home, it will not be broadcast for a continuous 42 minutes. Instead, live streaming will be used for a portion of the class when the teacher is doing a demonstration or providing a lecture.

We believe that this technology can have meaningful benefits, if used correctly.  We have been working with committee faculty members to help develop the parameters to make this a valuable resource.

At some point as the year progresses, some teachers may choose to pre-record or record their instruction so that students can watch the lesson at their convenience. However, that will be a choice made by individual teachers and not an expectation of the school district.

Again, the list of courses can be found on our website

As a result of this update, we are extending the deadline for Learning Pathway enrollment for secondary students until Friday, August 21, 2020.

You can now indicate that you would like to participate in the live streamed classes by selecting the cyber option and the specific live streamed classes.
