A Message from the Superintendent -- Important Calendar Update

A Message from the Superintendent

Dear BASD Families:

Thank you for your patience as we continue to navigate the state’s COVID-19 school operating procedures in addition to some inclement weather.

As you know, we used our Act 80/ Professional Development days on Monday, January 18 and Monday, January 25 to test how a voluntary school closure could impact our ability to stay open for the rest of the week.

The week of January 11 (no voluntary closures), we had to close five of our school buildings. The week of January 18 (with the three day closure), we were able to operate in person at all of our schools. However, if we did not have the closure, two of our buildings would have been closed last week.

Therefore, I would like to temporarily have voluntary closures moving forward in hopes that we can create a more consistent operating schedule for our school community while maximizing in person instruction.

Since we missed two days of in person instruction this week, we will not have another voluntary closure this week. Assuming we do not hit our COVID-19 threshold and we do not experience any more inclement weather, all of our schools will be open for in person instruction for the remainder of this week (Thursday, January 28th AND Friday, January 29).

We are tentatively planning to start our voluntary shift to remote instruction/ school building closures in February on the following dates:

  • Friday, February 5 -- Remote instruction, school buildings closed

  • Friday, February 12 -- Scheduled Act 80/Professional Development Day, no school for students

  • Friday, February 19 -- Remote instruction, school buildings closed

  • Friday, February 26 -- Remote instruction, school buildings closed

The goal is to have closures on Fridays while we are operating in the substantial range for COVID-19 community spread. In order to create a consistent schedule, we had to shift our Act 80/professional development day that was scheduled for Monday, February 15th to Friday, February 12th. Therefore, Monday, February 15th will now be a regular school day for all students K-12.

Please keep in mind that these dates are subject to change. The goal is to create a consistent schedule for families, but also maximize in person instruction for our students. Therefore, if one of our schools were to reach the state’s COVID-19 threshold prior to our next voluntary closure date, that school would have to shift to remote instruction while that building is closed for three days.

Families will receive building specific communication in the event that their child’s school has to deviate from our schedule for any reason.

Thank you again for your patience and flexibility.
