The Office of the Attorney General adopted the Safe2Say Something Program, which will be used by all school districts in Pennsylvania. • Monday, February 18, 2019
  • Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Northwest School Zone

The Butler Township Police Department has requested that we disable the blinking school zone/ 15 mph sign on Route 68 (Evans City Road) in front of Northwest Elementary School, since we do not have any classified walkers to or from school. Having students who walk to school is a requirement to have a blinking school zone.  We wanted to make you aware so that you would not be concerned when the lights are no longer flashing during school arrival and dismissal.

A Surprise Homecoming The Nichols Family

SRU students teach science to 400 Butler 2nd graders SRU Planetarium

"SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Reclined in a seat inside Slippery Rock University's planetarium, an awestruck second-grader points to video projected on the 30-foot-wide domed ceiling and tells a classmate how all the planets revolve around the sun. Their classmates later hold up fruits and vegetables that represent the size of the planets, like a cherry tomato for Earth and a watermelon for Jupiter." Read more>

UPDATE: BASD Closed on Monday, November 19

While I had hoped we would be able to have school tomorrow, we have run into a few additional complications this afternoon. At this point, we know we will not be able to open our schools tomorrow. Thus, all Butler Area School District public schools will be closed tomorrow (November 19, 2018). Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work through this unique situation.

After School/ Evening Activities Cancelled

At this time, we are still planning to dismiss all schools at their regular time. Please be aware that our buses may be delayed, as all drivers have been instructed to proceed with extra caution.

All after school and evening activities have been cancelled for this evening (Thursday, November 15, 2018).  However, at this time, the band trip will still depart as scheduled late this evening.

School Delay and Cancellation Procedures

With the winter season upon us, we’d like to remind you of our school delay and closing procedures.

I make the decision to delay or cancel school after I review the weather forecast and consult with our Transportation Department. When necessary, the district also consults with the municipalities and other resources within our community.  Each decision regarding whether or not to delay or cancel school is made with student safety as the primary concern. I recognize that any delay or cancellation can create hardships for our families and do not take this decision lightly.

As part of their efforts, state troopers may drive through school grounds or visit the main office at a school at any time during the school day. Their hope is that the enhanced presence in Pennsylvania schools will assist in keeping our students and staff safe.

A Message from the Superintendent: Possible Early Dismissal

It was a great first week at Butler Area School District! As I was walking the halls of our schools, I really enjoyed seeing the faces of students who were actively engaged in learning. However, I also saw the faces of students who were uncomfortably hot in some of our buildings -- especially in the afternoon.
