Planned Instruction -- Grades 7-12

Dear Secondary Parents and Students,

We hope you all had a nice spring break. It’s been a month since our schools have closed and it’s amazing how much has changed in that short amount of time. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we continue to transition into our new normal for the rest of this school year.

All of our teachers will be using Google Classroom as a basis for their classes for the remainder of this school year. All students were introduced to their teachers’ Google Classrooms last week. We’re off to a great start, but we know this transition isn’t seamless for everyone. If you are having difficulty, please use our Home Tech Help Line.

This week, secondary students (grades 7-12) are making the transition from “Enrichment and Review” to “Planned Instruction.”

So what does this change mean for you?

  • Teachers will be communicating directly with students using Google Classroom. They will receive assignments, submit assignments and have class discussion using this platform.

  • You will see more instructional information coming home to help with learning new concepts. This may include videos, Google Slides or other materials through Google Classroom.

  • Students will be responsible for completing and turning in assignments through Google Classroom for a grade.  Due dates will be assigned, but our teachers will be flexible and understanding in accepting assignments.

  • Students are expected to participate online daily and submit assignments on a regular basis.

Grades for the fourth nine-week grading period will be determined as follows:

  • Students are expected to complete school work and submit it to their teacher who will grade their work.

  • Students will be issued a 4th quarter grade.

  • Students must finish with a 60% average or higher for the remainder of the fourth nine-weeks to receive a passing quarter grade.

Final grades will be determined by:

  • For students who receive below a 60% in the fourth quarter, the final grade for the course will calculated by:

    • The combination of all earned grades in each of the four quarters of the academic year, along with the Semester Exam from first semester if applicable.

  • For students who earn a 60% or above in the fourth quarter, the final grade for the course will be calculated by whichever methodology below best benefits the student.

    • The combination of all earned grades in each of the four quarters of the academic year, along with the the Semester Exam from first semester if applicable.

    • The average of their grades from the first three nine-week grading periods along with the Semester Exam from first semester if applicable for a full-year course.

    • The same as their grade from the third nine weeks for a second semester course.

Our goal is to keep our students engaged and learning throughout this closure. We are also taking steps to ensure our seniors graduate and underclassmen are prepared for success when we are able to return to school.

We ask that all students do their best to participate. If you are having trouble or start falling behind with your work, please reach out to your teachers and make them aware of your situation. We’ll work together to help all of our students achieve success during this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,
Dr. John Wyllie, SHS Principal
Mr. Stephen Dobransky, IHS Principal
