Butler Area School District Food Service is always working to offer students healthier and tastier choices. We serve school meals that meet tough federal nutritional standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Students are offered milk, fruits, vegetable, proteins, and grains. Meals must meet strict limits for saturated fat and portion size.
Standards for the school year include:
- Age appropriate calorie limits
- Larger servings of vegetables and fruit
- A wider variety of vegetables (including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
- Fat free or 1% milk
- More Whole Grain
School meals are a great value and huge convenience for busy families. Encourage your child to try some new foods this school year!
Free and Reduced Price Lunch Program
Those students who were eligible for Free or Reduced-Priced Meals at the end of the 2016-2017 school year are eligible at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year. To continue this benefit uninterrupted, you must reapply by October 12, 2017 unless you have received a direct certification letter.
If you received a Direct Certification letter from the Food Service Office in August indicating that your child(ren) are automatically eligible to receive free meals, do not complete an application for the 2017-2018 school year. Please follow the instructions in the letter if you do not want your children to receive free meals.
It is also now possible for families to apply for Free or Reduced-Price Meals online at www.basdk12.org or www.compass.state.us. After your application has been processed, you will receive a letter in the mail indicating your eligibility.
