Aquaponic Mini Farm

aquaponics - noun (used with a singular verb)

A farming system that circulates wastewater from animal aquaculture to hydroponically cultivated plants, whereby the plants draw nutrients from the waste and filter the water, allowing for its recycled use by the aquatic animals.

5th grade students get to observe plants growing without soil in the BMS mini farm.  In science class, 5th graders learned that plants only need water, carbon dioxide, and basic nutrients to grow healthy and strong.  When water with fish waste is used to grow plants without soil, it is referred to as aquaponics.  Each 5th grade academic team has their own group of plants to observe as they grow from seeds.
