The Butler Middle School Run Club is a free club that is open to all 5th and 6th grade girls at the Middle School. The club meets two times each week throughout the fall to train for the Butler YMCA Turkey Trot on Nov 3rd. The Turkey Trot is a 5K race. Every girl who entered fished the race last year!
In addition to training for the race, the club has volunteer speakers present lessons to the girls. This year the speakers have included staff from the Butler Reality Tour to talk about drug awareness, a lifestyle/fitness expert to talk about positive body image, and the cross country coach to talk about visualizing and running. In previous years, the club's speakers have discussed safe social media, healthy eating, and setting goals. Run Club also offers sessions where the girls get to take free Jazzercise and Yoga classes taught by certified instructors.
Thanks to generous donations from faculty, staff and community members, all girls receive water and a tshirt to wear to the race. In addition, the Run Club offers scholarships to those in need who cannot afford the race registration fee.
Each year, the Run Club continues to grow! There were 85 participants the first year, 120 participants last year, and 138 participants this year!
Thanks to everybody who has helped to make the Butler Middle School Run Club a success!
