Dear Parents and Guardians:
Butler Area School District has always maintained a commitment to supporting student development and growth. The School Counseling department’s mission statement upholds this pledge to student success through academic, social, emotional, and career awareness by means of a collaborative approach with students, parents, educators, and the community. It is our goal to develop life-long learners that are productive citizens in this changing global society. To this end, the School Counseling program in the Butler Area School District has adopted a comprehensive K-12 Guidance Plan to support college and career readiness for all students.
Future Readiness begins as a student enters primary school and continues on through high school. Beginning as early as kindergarten, school counselors engage students with lessons focused on interests, goal-setting, and character strengths. In fourth grade, students explore career interests through the Holland Code Career Test and Career Clusters Interest Survey.
Students in grades 5-12 develop an online career portfolio through Career Cruising, an Internet-based career exploration and planning tool to explore career and college options and develop a career plan. Each student is given a personalized access code to explore careers, scholarships, post-secondary schools, and financial aid. As students progress through the Middle, Intermediate, and Senior High Schools, they are exposed to various interest surveys, aptitude assessments, and career and educational opportunities designed to help them explore and identify options beyond graduation from high school.
Throughout this process, students develop a Career Action Plan (CAP) that they will use in a culminating interview at the end of their 11th grade year. This “CAP Interview” is designed to both prepare students for success beyond graduation and to celebrate student achievement throughout their educational career. The goal is for each student to participate in an interview with a professional in their career cluster of interest.
If you would like to participate in the CAP Interview as a community interviewer, please visit this link: http://bit.ly/2VlmTPT. Interviews will be held on May 14th – 17th of this year.
It is the goal of the K-12 Guidance Team to promote success for all students through the continuous identification of each student’s potential and promotion of lifelong learning for all. If you have any questions regarding the K-12 Comprehensive Guidance Plan for your child, please contact your child’s school counselor.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to support your child in the Butler Area School District.
