On May 21, 2019, members of the Butler Intermediate High School Fisheries Science Program attended this year's Water Day activities at the Thorn Creek Habitat Improvement Project.
One highlight of the day was the release of the rainbow and brook trout that were raised in the classroom aquaculture tanks. More than 125 fish were released into Thorn Creek!
Other student activities included an aquatic macroinvertebrate survey, electrofishing fisheries population survey, fly casting demonstration and practice, and riparian buffer planting. Students were able to work with professionals from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Butler County Conservation District, Connoquenessing Watershed Alliance, and XTO Energy.
A special thanks to Dr. Brian White, Dr. Brian Slamecka, and Mr. Breit Cochran for their assistance in making the day a success!
