Dear Butler Area School District Community:
We know you have many questions about the reopening of our schools on September 1, 2020. We are currently developing plans to provide all students with a learning environment that is effective, as familiar as possible, and aligned to all guidelines/mandates for the safe reopening of schools.
My goal is to share the details of our plan the first week of August. That will enable us to incorporate all of the most recent guidance and mandates from the state and hopefully still give our families time to process all of the new policies and procedures for the upcoming school year.
With that said, there are a few things we know right now.
We will have three Learning Pathways -- the Traditional School Model, Online/Cyber School Model and Hybrid School Model. Click to learn more>
Some families have shared that they are finding it difficult to make the best decision for their child. I understand your concern. That’s why the Learning Pathways were designed to be flexible. If the path you initially choose is not working out for your child, you will be able to change pathways throughout the year.
If you think the Online/Cyber School Model or the Hybrid School Model may work for your family, you can register online.

We will also post a recording of the Cyber Learning Program Family Information Session here soon.
Upon arrival at school, all students and staff members will have their temperature screened prior to entering our school buildings this year. Temperatures must be below 99.5 in order for students and staff members to attend school.
We will be using both thermal cameras and touchless thermometers.
We are requesting that parents check their child’s temperature in the morning before they board a bus or come to school.
Face Masks/Face Coverings
We have received a lot of questions about face masks/face coverings. At this time, Dr. Rachel Levine, Pennsylvania Secretary of Health, has issued a mandate that will require all students and staff members to wear a mask/face covering while at school and on the bus until further notice from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The order for schools is different from the order for the general public. Click to view more information on PDE's website>
More details will be shared the first week of August.
It is nearly impossible for us to social distance on our school buses. We struggle to have enough bus drivers during a normal school year. I believe this will exacerbate this issue.
All students will be required to wear face masks/face coverings on the bus. We have reworked some of our routes and are also reviewing arrival and dismissal procedures to limit the amount of time students are actually on their bus.
If a student cannot wear a face mask, face covering or face shield while on the bus for a medical, mental health or disability, we will work with the parents/guardians to make alternative transportation arrangements for the safety of that student as well as the other students on his/her bus route.
A number of parents have shared with me they intend to drive their child to school instead of using the bus. It would help us immensely to better understand how many families intend to do this. If it is a significantly larger number than in previous years, we may alter our arrival procedures to attempt to keep the traffic flow as efficient as possible.
We would appreciate it if families that can inform us of their intent to transport their child to school, home from school or both would take our survey. We will still keep a seat on the bus for the child, but it will help us plan. Click to take the transportation survey>
Please stay tuned for our full school reopening plans the first week of August. Thank you for your continued patience and support.
