Please Complete a Free/Reduced Meals Application

free reduced meals

Dear BASD Families,

Did you know that much of the funding our school district receives from the state and federal level is based on the number of students in our district who are eligible for free/reduced meals?

Prior to the pandemic, 50% of our families were eligible for free/reduced meals. This year, only 42% are on record as being eligible for free/reduced meals.

Significantly fewer applications were submitted from BASD families this year. We believe the decrease is based on the fact that meals are free for ALL students this year and therefore many families have not completed their free/reduced meals application.

We are asking today that you complete your free/reduced meals application as soon as possible if you have not already. There are several reasons why this is very important.

Your student is eligible for other benefits based on your family’s free/reduced meals status. The following programs will be free or offered at a reduced rate based on your family’s free/reduced status. This includes summer school, AP tests, and athletic programs, just to name a few.

Your family may be eligible for community based benefits. For example, the P-EBT card is based on your family’s free/reduced meals status.

Our district’s state and federal funding depends on the percentage of families who are eligible for free/reduced meals. This funding directly supports positions like reading specialists in our schools.  I am fearful that not accurately counting the number of families qualifying for the services they need will impact our ability to provide them.

Please take the time to complete your family's free/reduced meals application as soon as possible. More information along with links to download a paper application or submit your application online can be found on our website. www.basdk12.org/Content2/1472

Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Brian J. White, Jr., Ed.D.
Superintendent
Butler Area School District
