Superintendent
Brian White, Ed.D. is the superintendent of Butler Area School District, which is located north of Pittsburgh and serves 6,400 students. As the superintendent, Dr. White is responsible for managing the day to day operation of the district. He facilitated a comprehensive strategic planning process that involved the entire Butler Area community. That process led to the creation of the Butler Area School District Strategic Plan that Dr. White uses as a guide to lead the district.
The University of Pittsburgh’s Tri-State Area School Study Council presented Dr. White with their Distinguished Educator Award in 2018. Dr. White is also a recipient of the University of Pittsburgh’s PreK-12 Educator Alumni Award. In addition, he was selected by Pittsburgh Magazine 40 under 40 and was selected as a member of the Leadership Pittsburgh Class XXIX.
Dr. White serves on the College Board’s Pennsylvania Superintendents Advisory Board and is a board member for the Butler County Community Development Corporation. Dr. White is also a member of the Remake Learning Council and Western Pennsylvania Superintendents Forum. In addition, Dr. White serves on the University of Pittsburgh's College in High School Advisory Board and is a member of the Executive Committee of University of Pittsburgh’s Tri-State Area School Study Council.
Previously, Dr. White served on the Board of Directors for the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association and served as the president of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education Alumni Committee. Dr. White has also served on the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators (PASA) Technology Committee and the Legislative Committee. He previously co-chaired the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Superintendent’s Instructional Technology Committee, chaired the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Superintendent’s Workforce Development Committee, and served on the Allegheny Intermediate Unit’s Executive Director’s Advisory Team.
As an educator, Dr. White has had the opportunity to impact the lives of many students and help ensure they are on a path to success throughout their K-12 education and beyond. Dr. White believes making connections and collaborating throughout the region is one of the most effective ways to ensure all students have access to as many relevant learning opportunities as possible.
Dr. White is the co-creator and co-chair of the Vision 2020 Project. He has designed and facilitated many high impact learning sessions for superintendents from diverse school districts who are all focused on growing as visionary leaders. Vision 2020 explores important topics in education and leadership with the goal of helping regional superintendents grow as leaders, ultimately impacting the future of our schools throughout the region.
Dr. White began his career with Pittsburgh Public Schools as a teacher, activities director and band/orchestra director at Brashear High School, before becoming an administrative practitioner and then acting assistant principal at Schenley High School. Dr. White then held several positions at the Beaver Area School District, including assistant principal, middle/high school principal and assistant superintendent before becoming the superintendent of the Chartiers Valley School District.
Dr. White holds a bachelor’s degree in music from West Virginia University as well as a master’s degree and doctorate degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. White and his wife Danielle have three sons – Jay, Jonathan and Jeremy.
