Scholarship & Music Program Endowments

Dear Butler Area School District Community,

We are thrilled to announce that Mei and Herald Chen (Butler High School ’88) are generously supporting students, programs and the broader Butler community through three new endowments totaling $4.5 million.

Herald’s parents settled in Butler in the 1960s and raised three children, all graduates of Butler High School. His father, S. Andrew Chen, was a Professor of Psychology at Slippery Rock University, where he taught for more than three decades. His mother, Veronica L. Chen, is a lifelong learner who served as the Director of Library Services at Butler County Community College for over fifteen years.

Today more than thirty years later, through the benefits of education, hard work, and a great deal of good fortune, Mei and Herald Chen are pleased to establish three new endowments at Butler Area School District. They are proud to pay it forward and hope that future recipients will one day do the same for others.

“Butler High School is an extraordinary institution — one that serves thousands of students from all walks of life and offers a remarkably diverse range of academic programs, clubs, arts, and athletics,” said Mr. Chen. “My siblings, Thomas and Andrea, and I were fortunate to be supported by outstanding Butler teachers, mentors, and lifelong friends. The generosity of prior Butler philanthropists, including for example the Vogeley Scholarship, helped create educational opportunities that shaped our futures. Now we are honored to do the same for future generations.”

The three new endowments are:

  • The S. Andrew Chen Scholarship, funded with $2.5 million, to help support the cost of a four-year college education.
  • The Veronica L. Chen Scholarship, funded with $1.5 million, to support Butler High School students taking classes at Butler County Community College.
  • The Harding Whitacre Music Endowment, funded with $500,000, to help fund annual music department needs. This endowment honors Harding "Corky" Whitacre's lifelong dedication to education and music through his thirty-five years of teaching in the Butler schools.

“Our district is incredibly grateful for this extraordinary act of generosity from Mr. and Mrs. Chen,” said Dr. Brian White, Superintendent of Butler Area School District. “A contribution of this magnitude will create opportunities for generations of students through two scholarships and an endowment to support our music program. We are truly honored by this generosity and excited for the incredible impact it will have for years to come.”

Mr. Harding Whitacre shared how touched he was that a former student would think of him for something of this magnitude.

“I’m speechless,” said Mr. Whitacre. “To have somebody think of me like this. It’s a teacher’s dream. I’m so honored.”

The Shium A. Chen Scholarship, The Veronica L. Chen Scholarship and the Harding Whitacre Music Endowment will be announced to the Butler community at our Senior High School Awards Night on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
