School Calendar Adjustments

Dear BASD Parents and Guardians,

We have made adjustments to our school calendar as a result of our delayed start.

Monday, November 11th has been designated as an Act 80/School Conference day. Students do not need to report to school on this day. Teachers will be able to use that time for parent-teacher conferences. They have also been given the flexibility to schedule parent-teacher conferences earlier in November.

Wednesday, November 27 has been designated a regular school day for students and teachers. At this point, students and teachers should plan to report to school on that day. However, we are hoping to be able to use that day as a Flexible Instructional Day (FID). We have submitted a FIDs application on behalf of Butler Area School District and will know by early November if our Flexible Instructional Day application has been approved.

If you’re wondering what Flexible Instructional Days are and how they will impact your student, you aren’t alone!

Flexible Instructional Days (FID) is a new initiative for schools launched by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“A Flexible Instructional Day (FID) Program is a tool available to public school entities to be used as an alternate approach to delivering instruction if a circumstance arises that prevents instruction in customary manner.” https://www.education.pa.gov/Teachers%20-%20Administrators/School%20Services/Pages/FID.aspx

Flexible Instructional Days are intended to be used when circumstances prevent school districts from delivering traditional instruction. One of the circumstances where the state supports the use of a FIDs day is when school is canceled due to transportation issues.

If our application is approved, we would be able to have up to 5 Flexible Instructional Days per school year. At this point, I am hoping to be able to designate Wednesday, November 27 as a FIDs day.

If we are approved and able to designate November 27th as a Flexible Instructional Day, students will receive take home kits with instructional materials they will need to complete. It is expected that all students complete the assigned learning activities and actively participate in the assigned activities.  Students will have 10 days from the Flexible Instructional Day to submit all work for credit. In addition, faculty will be available remotely on November 27th to assist students who need help.

At this point, we must still plan for Wednesday, November 27th to be a regular school day for students and faculty. However, if our FIDs application is approved, we will let you know.

Sincerely,

Brian J. White, Jr., Ed.D.
Superintendent
Butler Area School District
