The first grade students at Summit Elementary School are busy with Maker Projects this year! Teachers Cindy Michelini and Julie Peles are integrating the maker movement into ELA class for the first grade students.
This project started with a Big Book titled "Chuck's Truck." The story setting was a farm and the plot was how the farm animals packed into the truck, which (spoiler alert!) eventually broke on the way to town.
Students worked in groups to identify the pages of the book that would fit in a story summary. After the students worked on summarizing, it was challenge time! They had 20 minutes to use K'Nex or Picasso Tiles to build a vehicle that would move 3 feet while carrying a small wooden farm animal.
We are excited to announce that all of the groups collaborated and used critical thinking skills to meet the challenge requirements. Great job, Summit Makers!
