Students in Mr. Michael Doran's Honors Environmental Science and Mr. Ben Klugh's Academic Biology classes recently traveled to Thorn Creek in Penn Township, Butler County, to participate in a Riparian Buffer Restoration Project.
The students first worked in teams in class to plan out and map six stream bank buffer sites to remediate and restore. They then researched various tree species that would be best suited for each site and purchased and color-coded each of their trees.
This project culminated in a field trip to the actual stream sites where students planted their live stake trees and learned about the Thorn Creek Trout Habitat stream improvements that have occurred there over the last nine years.
Special thanks to Instructional Coach, Mr. David Andrews, for his help in coordinating this field trip and to the PA Department of Environmental Protection for the Environmental Education Grant funding for this project.
