February 2, 2017 Update

LEAD AND COPPER WATER TEST RESULTS

Today we have received the attached results from the water test at Summit Elementary School.  These results reflect only lead and copper testing.  The sample from the well indicated a very low lead level and a “below detection limit” for copper.  The sample collected from the raw water tap, located in the boiler room, had higher levels of both lead and copper.  Both lead and copper are over the action level from the raw water tap in the boiler room.  We are investigating alternatives to solve this problem.

CYBER SCHOOL INFORMATION

During the past week, some parents have inquired about the Butler Area School District’s cyber school program.  The Butler Area School District has provided cyber education through the Butler Virtual Academy for approximately seven years.  During the 2015-2016 school year, the program expanded from the realm of secondary schools into grades 4-6.  There have been ongoing discussions of providing educational services for grades K-3, and we are immediately moving forward with this plan.

The program currently educates approximately 75 students and is maintained through a contract with VLN Partners, located in Pittsburgh, PA.  Students in the program are maintained as Butler Area School District students, and are provided with on-line curriculum and instruction, textbooks, and computer equipment.  If parents are interested in enrolling their child into Butler Virtual Academy, or obtaining more information regarding the program, please contact Brian Slamecka at (724)214-3101, or at brian_slamecka@butler.k12.pa.us.

ADDITIONS TO COMMUNICATION METHODS

In an effort to better communicate directly to parents and staff, additional notifications will be given.  The District has enabled functionality in the “BASD” mobile app to send notifications.  As long as a person downloads the app, then they can receive notifications directly to their phone.  Attached below is a document explaining how to download the mobile app onto your mobile device.  Please make sure that when you download the app, that you enable the “notifications” if it asks or by going to your device settings and enabling notifications.

(If you have already have this app, you can also get to these Summit website updates.  To see those from the app; Click on the app, Scroll to the right, find “School Resources” folder icon, Click change in upper righthand corner, Choose Summit Elementary, Scroll to the bottom right and click on the website icon in the bottom right)
